LEAD Glass Characteristics

General

Lead glass is utilized in medical and industrial applications so that the operator can view the part or patient without being exposed to radiation. In most cases, the radiation attenuation of the glass must be a least equal to the wall or barrier in which the window is located. Lead acrylic material can also be used for viewing applications.\

Lead Glass Characteristics

This glass is an extra dense flint glass with more than 65% lead oxide and greater than 70% heavy metallic oxide content that works with x-rays released by nuclear disintegration.  It has a high light transmission despite its high refractive index, resulting in very good transparency.

Availability Information

Since there is no domestic manufacturer of sheet lead glass, suppliers order popular sizes to meet customer expectations. These popular sizes are noted below and it is suggested that window frames be sized 1/4″ larger that the size desired to insure proper fit. If cutting is required, pricing will be based on the larger size piece.

Lead Equivalencies

The sizes noted above are available in various lead equivalencies; however, they are stock only in 1.6mm (1/16″) and 2.1mm (<3/32″) lead equivalencies. Other equivalencies must be ordered with a possible 6-8 week delivery required. Panes may be “stacked” to equal a special thickness.

Cleaning and Maintenance of Lead Glass

The surface of lead glass is susceptible to scratches as well as attacks from acids and alkalis. Lead glass should not be exposed to acid gasses. Humidity and strong temperature fluctuations combined with humidity may affect the glass. Cleaning should be done with a dry or hydrous emulsion of cerium oxide and a felt pad or plain water with a soft cloth. Avoid cleaners with acid or alkaline solvents ( ammonia, etc.) Ethanol 200 is recommended.
